Passports

Possibly one of Box Butte County’s best kept secrets is the fact that you may apply for a passport at the courthouse.

With passport applications on the rise nationwide, Box Butte County Clerk of the District Court Kevin Horn is encouraging applicants to plan ahead.

“If you need to renew your passport or will apply for the first time, it is recommended that you do so no less than two months prior to your trip,” Horn said. “The sooner the better as the U.S. Department of State reports that it will take up to six weeks to receive your passport after the application is mailed from our office.”

Applicants may pick up forms from the district court office located on the third floor of the courthouse. A certified copy of your birth certificate, a photo ID such as a driver’s license, and a 2 inch by 2 inch “headshot” photo of the applicant must be submitted with the application.

Fees vary depending on the applicant’s age and service being requested.

“Applicants aged 16 and older will have a higher fee than those 15 and younger,” Horn said. “However, an adult passport is valid for ten years while a child’s passport will expire after five years.” Passport information is available by calling the district court at 308-762-6293 or by logging on to travel.state.gov
